Cover Reveal and Guest Post: Twisted Reflections by Shay West

Back Blurb:

Alexis Davenport is learning to come to grips with her ability to travel through time, but she still hasn’t been able to stop the evil Drifter, and his Master, from trying to alter the past.
When she travels back to ancient Egypt, Alex gets a most unexpected surprise; she meets someone who can help her figure out how to use her powers, another Traveler like herself.
But can Alex learn how to control her gift before Drifter finds a way to stop her from meddling in his Master’s plans?

Twisted Reflections is the highly anticipated Book Two, in The Adventures of Alexis Davenport Series.

Soul Mates

When it comes to books, I prefer action compared to romance. Not that a little romance is necessarily a bad thing, I just like to read fast-paced books with battles and conflict. I prefer to read about how two people fall in love rather than the act of love itself. What brought the two together? Are they attracted only physically at first but love blossoms later? Do they hate each other only to find they have more in common than they realize? Are they drawn together like a moth to a flame, unable to resist one another? Are they forced into a marriage that their families arranged before they were born? There are so many ways people come to love one another and decide to make that commitment to stay together. It’s this aspect that fascinates me.

When it came to writing my YA series, the Adventures of Alexis Davenport, I knew I HAD to have some sort of romance. Or at the very least a serious crush. Because let’s face it, as a teenager, we tend to have massive crushes rather than a deep-rooted love. But these crushes can be an all-consuming force that robs us of what little sanity we have.

But I also went a step further and gave Alex something deeper than a crush, only she doesn’t quite understand the significance. Each time she travels back in time, she encounters a boy that she feels drawn to, almost as though she knows him better than she knows herself. Isn’t this the kind of love we all dream of? Finding that one person we are destined to be with and living happily ever after?

Will this boy be Alex’s one and only? You’ll have to read the Adventures of Alexis Davenport series and find out :)

Guest Post: Finding Your Voice: Writing in First Person or Third by Melissa Delport, author of The Legacy

The Legacy - MELISSA DELPORT
One man obsessed with power.

One woman prepared to sacrifice everything to stop him.

One war that changed the world.

“World War Three lasted twelve days. Twelve days was all it took for mankind to devastate the planet and almost eradicate the human race. No victor emerged from the ashes and billions lost their lives.

We survivors lived through the bleakest of winters. A primal existence became the new order, and the little that remained of our humanity hung in the balance.

Then one man stood up and changed the world. I believed, as did everyone else, that he was the hero of our time, the man who had saved us from our own demise. His name is Eric Dane and he is the President of the New United States of America.

He is also my husband, and my greatest enemy.

I grew up oblivious to the truth, until my father found me when I was nineteen years old. He told me about the many horrifying facts that our new leader kept hidden from us. And he told me that beyond the borders the Resistance grew and fought for freedom from the oppression that Eric Dane had imposed on us.

My name is Rebecca Davis. I am twenty-six years old, and in me the Resistance has found the ultimate weapon.”

A narrative of good and evil, love and passion, right and wrong – and at the centre of the story a strong woman who is prepared to sacrifice everything for the cause she believes in.

The Legacy is an action-packed, adrenalin-inducing thrill ride which will leave you riveted long after you have turned the last page.

Finding Your Voice: Writing in the First Person (or Third)

By Melissa Delport, author of The Legacy

There are many obstacles to overcome when writing your first book, few of which you actually realise until you put pen to paper, or fingers to keys, as we do now. As authors, we stumble, we fall, we brush ourselves off and we get back up again, because as any writer will know, we cannot silence the voice inside. Our stories need to be written.

When I first embarked on my writing journey I gave a lot of thought to plot and character description, to the book title and pivotal scenes that would unfold as my book progressed. Dialogue and time frame, chapter length and word count, all of these things were well-thought out and seriously deliberated. This took me at least forty minutes. Then I sat down and started typing. Strangely enough, not once did I consider which narrative mode I should use. It never even occurred to me, and yet the story unravelled in the first person. This style came naturally to me, and rather than work against it, I used it to my advantage.

The main benefit in using this style of writing is that the reader feels an emotional attachment to the narrator, which in my case, is the protagonist. The internal thoughts, emotions and perceptions of the protagonist are able to be conveyed to the reader and this makes for fantastic character development.

I have often wondered if I am perhaps doing my secondary characters a dis-service in writing from the first-person point of view, as one of the drawbacks of this particular writing style is that it does not always allow the reader to connect with the other characters’ thoughts and feelings. It can also limit plot, as we become aware of events primarily through the narrator’s eyes. Loosely put, if it doesn’t happen to, or around your protagonist, it doesn’t happen. The third-person narrative is far more flexible and consequently, the most frequently used model.

There are ways to get around these pitfalls of first-person narration. The narrator may refer to information they have heard from other characters in order to deliver a broader point of view. Memories of the past are also useful in providing insight that is reliable. I make use of secondary-character dialogue to ensure that the reader is always informed as to what is going on “behind the scenes” so to speak.  A popular trend at the moment is the alternating point of view, whereby there is more than one narrator. Personally, I find that this style can become confusing and the character transitions need to be handled carefully so that the reader doesn’t become frustrated.

For me, I prefer to stick with what comes naturally. I like to invoke a connection between reader and protagonist, which I feel is best done when the reader can understand and identify with the main character and “live” that character during the course of reading the book. It is more emotive and if done properly, the first-person narrative can present a powerful “voice”.

Like any true writer, I like to challenge myself, and one of my personal writing goals is to try and complete a novel in a different narrative mode – which would obviously be the third-person narrative, given that the second should really be reserved only for song writing and “Choose your own Adventure Stories”.

Finding your voice is an exciting step in your writing journey, but I don’t think it is a conscious choice. It will come as easily as breathing, and if you listen to it rather than fight it, the end result will be all the better for it.

Book Review: Dream on by M. Kircher

(I received this free book from the author in exchange for an honest review)

Goodreads Summary: Seventeen-year-old dreamwalker, Em, might have to choose—leave her mother forever in the dreamworld or save the life of hot, rebel Gabe.

Emily Dal Monte and her mother, Lily, are special. They’re humans with a glitch in their genetic code that allows them to explore the fantastic, and often terrifying, world of their dreams for as long as they choose to remain asleep. But when Em’s father is killed in a tragic accident and her distraught mother loses herself more and more in the dreams of her crumbling mind, Em is forced to support the two of them the only way she knows how, by writing down her mother’s amazing dreams and selling them as books. Enter Gabriel Sobel, the punk newcomer at Em’s high school who realizes Em is the daughter of his favorite, reclusive author. Gabe can’t figure out why Em keeps brushing him off and makes it his mission to find out what’s really going on at the Dal Monte household. He stumbles upon their shocking family secret just as Lily takes a turn for the worse. It’s up to Em, Gabe, and one very nosy book editor to hop from one extraordinary dream to the next, to find Lily and convince her to wake up before she loses her mind…and before Em loses her first chance at love.

______________________________________________________

Emily and her Mom are sleepers. Not normal like you and I go to sleep and then wake up in the morning. They can go to sleep for days without food or water.
This has never been a problem until Emily’s Father died and her Mother starts sleeping much more often and for longer looking for her Father in dreams.
She and her Mother live a secret life because of who they are and because Emily has taken over her Mother’s job as an author of adventure novels. No one knows she is writing the books instead of her Mother. Until she misses a deadline and Evan the editor becomes curious and pays a visit with a request not only to meet the author but to ask her to do a national book tour.
Gabe, a new kid at school has also become a problem. He loves the books and gets a little too curious about Emily! She ends up telling him the whole story after she realizes that she is going to have to help her Mother come back from her dreams.
Gabe and Evan both want to help her find her Mother. But they are not sleepers and if they are in the dreams too long they could die!  Emily warns them but they still want to help.
Adventures from the books start to ensue the moment they enter her dreams. They follow clues from one dream to the next in search of her Mother! Time is running short and Evan and Gabe need to wake up but they lack one more clue to find her Mother.

To find out if they survive the adventures and return to safety or if her Mother Dreams On check out   M. Kircher’s latest novel Dream On.

What I liked about this book was the detail when Emily and Gabe were in the dreams following the clues to get to the next place. If I had to say something I didn’t like I guess it would be the pace. I found myself at times having to put the book down and come back to it later.

My rating for this book is a 3 out of 5 stars.
Review by Candie Chatham

New Blogger to Join Highway-Y.A

I have been blogging for almost a year and this blog has taken off in so many ways that I did not think was possible. I have all of you to thank for that.  What started out as me just posting reviews on books that I enjoyed turned into being involved in book tours, working with authors and publishers, and meeting new bloggers in the blogging community. Since this blog has grown I have decided to have a good friend of mine blog with me. I am in school and the only time that I can truly commit to blogging is during the months that I am not in school or when I am on holidays. I would love to introduce Candie as a fellow blogger at Highway-Y.A! :)

Here is a little bit more about Candie

Candie Chatham
I am a Graphic Artist for a Library System but I have always had a love for people especially young people! I have a background in Children’s education of almost 12 years some of which was the very challenging Montessori teaching method. I have also worked with high school and college age students through my church for a number of years and have done volunteer work for a local radio station. I now work for a library where I get to do all kinds of fun things like teach classes to all ages and figure out fun things to challenge people with art!
I have always been a reader since I was very young and have had my own library card since I was old enough to have one! My favorite genre is dystopian!!! I just love all the futuristic things author come up with! It amazes me the imagination it takes to bring things to life that don’t even exist! I see things as I read them and that is how I decide whether a book is good or not. If I can see a picture of what I am reading well enough that the story plays out in my head I am in love with that book from the start! This is my favorite reading genre but I read all types of things and basically if it reaches out and grabs me by the end of the first chapter, I am reading it to the end!
Some of my favorite things to do besides reading are painting, sewing, quilting just about any kind of crafting! I don’t sit still very well. I am always doing something. It’s rare that I don’t have a project or two going at one time! Oh, although I don’t get to do it as much as I used to I am a singer as well.

Book Review: A Silent Prayer by Samreen A. (Bk 1)

Adam Gibson is a young and powerful Toronto millionaire. Despite his many blessings, he is an atheist, though he has an altruistic soul. He denies there is a God--until he meets a beautiful stranger in a place that does not exist for anyone but him.

Rania Ahmed strongly believes in God, but has lost hope she will ever find her soul mate. Endowed with hypnotic beauty and cursed by a brutal past, Rania has no idea she has cast a spell on Adam, who has never received more from a woman than physical pleasure. As Adam slowly discovers the true meaning of love from Rania, he begins to face his demons and reconsider his beliefs. He learns to love, forgive and repent. But as Adam grows closer to Rania, a series of strange, unexplained events threatens to drive them apart. To keep her from being destroyed by her past, he must persuade her to trust him with her deepest secrets.

In this spiritual romance, an atheist embarks on a path of enlightenment with a tormented soul who may just have the power to change everything he has ever believed to be true.

__________________________________________________
This story is a mixture of suspense, mystery, and romance all together. What I love about this story is that we get to see what both of the characters are thinking in the chapters so that is a plus for me. The story starts off in Toronto. Adam and Raina have different lives. Adam is a billionaire and has everything that he could ever want or need. Raina is a graphic designer and keeps mostly to herself.

Adam is an atheist and doesn't have has little appreciation to the things that he has. Raina, who is faithful tries to be the example that Adam needs and tries to show him just how blessed he really is. Their relationship was very interesting to read. It was more centered around trust and leaping out on "faith" that what really meets the eye. They respect each other.

I will admit it took some time for me to connect to the characters but once I kept reading I was hooked. I loved reading about these two and their journey. This is book One and to finish their story you have to read the next ones. The ending made sure of that. :)

Book Review: Heart of Eternity by N. Jay

(I recieved this free ebook in exchange for an honest review)

Goodreads Summary: When you are invited to dance with the muse of love, when you are driven to the edge by the pain of the past, when you hold the remedy for what ails you in your arms you will find yourself in the heart of eternity.
Set in the Blue Mountain’s town of Blackheath in New South Wales, Australia, the novel Heart of Eternity introduces two very different characters, Jay and Naida, who encounter each other at a challenging time in each of their lives. Their individual expressions of the feelings they provoke in each other give rise to a turmoil that could ultimately claim their lives. When two people understand so deeply the pain each other has faced will it force them into the abyss of darkness or will their combined need for healing allow love to enter both their hearts?

_______________________________________

Reading Heart of Eternity was very interesting to read. It was a very good, spiritual, and powerful read that I enjoy reading. There was different sides to look at as far as one being good and the other evil.

Naida is twenty one years old and has cancer. She goes against what her parents want as far as taking the right necessities to be healed and goes on spiritual route. To do that she goes to a spiritual healer called Zachriel.  I love how at the beginning she knew what she wanted to do and also I liked that her parents understood what she wanted.

Jay is what we would consider the bad boy of the story. He is a womanizer and heart breaker.  Danger is what he lives for and love is something that he consider he does not want. His life is nothing but heartache and pain and has no conscience for anyone else.

When they come together they realize how much they really need each other.

Naida and Jay's story had me captivated from the beginning to the end. The writing style was great and flowed smoothly. The plot was very mature and thought out. As I said before, it is a powerful read of finding one's self and overcoming obstacles life throws at us.

Book Review: Things in Ditches by Jimmy Olsen

Goodreads Summary: A murder mystery novel. The story of Phillip "Dutch" Cleland, a man with a hidden past and a future about to explode in his face. A seemingly average man whose love for two women drives him to such extremes that deception, even murder and suicide are not longer unthinkable.
When a lovely corpse is discovered near Dutch's home town, the nearby ditches begin to yield a harvest of secrets, none of them comforting for Dutch. Soon he is forced to flee for his life, before his past and the police slip a noose around his neck.
Things In Ditches is peopled with small town characters that are so humorous and eccentric, their oddball antics enliven every paragraph and page. A reader can't help but be reeled in by the strange citizens of Willow River, until soon discovering they're really not so different from all of us and Dutch's story is the oldest story on earth; good and evil, betrayal and laughter. And finally, the power of love and friendship, forging one man's determination to overcome all odds, even death.
__________________________________________
SOOOOOO GOOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm going to leave the review short and sweet because I don't want to give anything away. It's a mystery :)))
I love a really good mystery and sometimes they are hard to come by but Things in Ditches was just that. It was humorous and a page turner. This murder mystery takes place in a small town in Minnesota.  is a story of Dutch who is the suspect that killed Vicky who was found dead in a ditch.  Throughout the story we are told of Vicky's life and how she ended up deceased and left in the ditch. Dutch who is experiencing murder/suicide is on the run.
The plot was very thought out and I enjoyed reading it so much. As I said it is humorous and has some twist in the story. It reminded me of Perry Mason, Murder She wrote, and all of those other t.v shows that are like that. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
